Le Hotel Crystal Montreal, QC – Deluxe King Suite Review 2017

My wife and I stayed in the Deluxe King Suite at Le Hotel Crystal in Montreal for 3 nights over the Christmas break. Our goal was just to get away for a while, do some shopping for Christmas presents and eat some delicious food along the way. Here is our quick review.

The location is great! We didn’t need our car or transit during our stay.

  • It’s only a block away (~3 minute walk) from the Bell Centre. We didn’t end up going to see a Montreal Canadian’s game, but I don’t think there’s a better hotel to stay at if that’s your plan.
  • It’s also only a 3 minute walk away from Rue Sainte-Catherine O, which is a busy hub of retail stores where we did a bunch of shopping.
  • It’s a 10 minute walk away from the Eaton Centre, where we spent a considerable amount of time (and money) shopping.

The 2 TVs in the suite are new, big (47″) and crystal clear ;). Don’t be fooled by the old, small TVs shown on their website – check out the video walk through I posted below for a more recent overview of the room. There wasn’t much to watch (typical of cable TV these days), but we were able to hook up an HDMI cable we brought to watch a couple movies/Netflix.

Valet Service
Our valet was genuinely friendly, relaxed and always happy to help. Leaving the hotel and getting our car was super fast and smooth and they gave us 2 bottles of water for the road which was appreciated since we had a long trip back.

Conceirge was very responsive to our requests and fixing the issues that arose (see Cons below).

Room Not as Advertised
First room was not as advertised. After driving for 6 hours from Toronto to Montreal, we arrived and found that our room 702 did not have the “deep tub” as advertised:

We called the concierge about the lack of a deep tub and to their credit, they had us in a new room in 5 minutes. The valet who had taken our car 10 minutes earlier came up to our room and helped us move our luggage down the hall to our new room 704.

Second Room Smelled Like Smoke
However, the the room (704) smelled like strongly of cigarette smoke & didn’t have hot plate/stove top as shown on the website. Not that we needed it, but we might have used if it was there. After our long drive, we didn’t want to call the conceirge again and request another room change, so we opened the window to air out the room which worked to some degree. After about 10 minutes or so our noses would get use to the smell, so it wasn’t all bad.

Internet Access Issue
After being switched to a new room, we could not connect the wifi using either our old or new room number. We called the conceirge and they were very quick to provide internet access via another password.

Noise From Street
On the 7th floor where we were staying, sounds from car horns and emergency vehicles were very loud/noticable, although they only happened once or twice a day while we were in the room. They never woke us up thanks to the room-within-a-room setup.

Limited Nespresso Cartridges
Only received a total of 4 Nespresso cartridges during our 3 night stay for the 2 of us. They never refilled the basket. Not sure whether that’s all you get or they simply forgot, but we didn’t feel like having to call the Conceirge again to ask.

Nearby Restaurants

Ye Old Orchard Pub & Grill
We got a late night dinner at Ye Olde Orchard Pub & Grill which is across the street from Le Hotel Crystal. Solid selection of beer and food. Service was quick and friendly. Wasn’t too busy when we went, but I’m sure it is packed before and after hockey games due to its proximity. My chicken fingers and fries were tasty and filling (definitely above average), but my wife’s curry wasn’t overly flavorful and she didn’t finish it.

Restaurant Phayathai
Located in a repurposed old home (official description: “stone mansion”), the atmosphere was quiet and cozy as there is only seating for a maximum of ~25 in a small room. My red curry chicken was authentic and delicious and my wife’s vegetable curry was excellent. Definitely in my top 5 curies I’ve ever had. Service was a bit slow and it took them a while to refill my water each time I finished it (I was drinking a lot as it was spicier than I usually go for).

Wienstein & Gavino’s
A 5 minute walk from the hotel, we went back to Wienstein & Gavino’s where we ate twice during our previous trip to Montreal. Pesto dip that comes with the fresh bread at the beginning is addictive. My steak salad with goat cheese, nuts and tangerine was fresh and very tasty. They have a number of vegetarian options and my wife’s recommends the Mediterranean pizza. Service was a bit impersonal this time around, but they were quick and efficient. As another reviewer stated: “it’s the best way to start a good night out”.
